WChs annual events

The Washington County Historical Society organizes its year around four specific events which include the Battle of Fayetteville, Arkansas Statehood Day, the Ice Cream Social, and the Annual Meeting. The details and scheduling for each of these events are provided on this page.

The Battle of Fayetteville, held on the third Saturday in April. (The date of the battle April 18, 1863.)                               

Statehood Day Lecture, held on the Sunday prior to the day of Arkansas statehood, June 15, 1836.

The Ice Cream Social, held the third Saturday in August.    

The Annual Membership Meeting, held in October. 

OUt in the County 

WCHS Out in the County event will be announced at a later date. No July gathering will be held.

At History Camp this year, our campers will explore the the house and grounds of the Historic Headquarters House Museum, while learning about Historical Toys and Games. We'll have some fun and educational presentations by some of our friends from other museums, including the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History and the Tontitown Historical Museum, along with other local historians and artists. 

We'll learn about how children in the past had to make most of their own toys and games to play with, and we'll make our own to take home. 

Some of our hands-on activities will include making wooden toys, board games, dolls, balls, marbles, puppets, and so much more! 

We'll also explore what kids did before screens existed, by learning about antique thaumatropes, stereoscopes, zoetropes, and "Magic Lanterns", and making some of our own.

We'll learn about the Tebbetts family, who lived in Headquarters House at the start of the Civil War. In addition, we'll talk about the enslaved people who lived and worked there as well.

As always, we'll learn and perform 1860s Social Dances, such as the Virginia Reel and Soldier's Joy. 

Again this year, we'll be learning about the Battle of Fayetteville, which took place right in front of Headquarters House, by playing a tabletop RPG game based on the Battle. We'll learn the history of who fought in the Battle and why, and the role that it played in the Civil War.

Previous campers will remember how we reenact a live version of the Battle as well, and this year we'll all be making our own hobby-horses to ride into battle! 

Camp will take place at The Washington County Historical Society at 118 E. Dickson St in Fayetteville.

We'll prepare and cook something tasty in our Dutch oven each day! 

Healthy snacks and drinks will be provided. Snacks, all supplies and a one-year student membership to the Washington County Historical Society are included in the price of enrollment.

Enrollment is $175.00, with each additional sibling $100.00

For Ages 8-18

You'll have two chances to learn and play with us: 

Session 1 from July 13-17 9 AM-1 PM

Session 2 from July 20-24 9 AM-1 PM
