Journal begins July 1, 1861 with 18 year-old James’ enlistment in the Confederate Army with Captain Pittman’s Company of Arkansas volunteers. He saw action at Wilson’s Creek, Pea Ridge and Corinth, Mississippi. His active military career ended with his capture at Port Hudson and internment at Johnson’s Island.
